  • For these sandwiches, use thinly sliced ham.
  • 的面包,用切蛋糕,乡村式的bread, sourdough bread or white sandwich bread. The bread should have a delicate texture and not be too thick.
  • You may make a mustard-mayo spread using 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard and 1 tablespoon mayonnaise rather than 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard.
  • Croque Madame is prepared using premium cheeses such as gruyere and parmesan. Emmental, Jarlsberg, or Beaufort cheese can be used instead. You can also use a cheese you like, but keep in mind that it may not be made the same way as in France.
  • If your pan is not holding all four pieces of bread at once, you can do this in stages.
  • You may have some béchamel left over; You don't need to use them all, and you can reheat if the sauce is too thick to run.
  • If you want a speedy brunch meal, make the bechamel ahead of time and only assemble/bake the sandwich when ready to serve.
  • You may also serve the sandwich alone without the egg on top if you like. Croque Monsieur is the name for this kind of sandwich.

  1. Melt 4 tablespoons of butter in a medium saucepan. Then mix the flour and butter and cook for about 2 minutes until it gets golden brown.
  2. Add whole milk and salt to the pan. Stir the ingredients constantly until the mixture thickens. After cooking for 3-4 minutes, remove the sauce from the stove.
  3. In a separate mixing bowl, combine ⅛ cup Parmesan cheese and ½ cup gruyere cheese.
  4. Place 4 slices of bread on the baking tray. Place 2 slices of ham on each slice. Add 2 slices of ham and the bechamel sauce you prepared on each slice. Put the remaining cheese on the bread and cover the sandwiches with other 4 slices of bread.
  5. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a medium skillet. Brush the sandwich with extra butter and place in the pan. Bake each side of the sandwich for about 4 minutes, until the top is golden or the cheese is melted. Fry the sandwiches in the same way with the remaining butter.
  6. After cooking the sandwiches, transfer them on the baking sheet. Spread the remaining béchamel sauce over the sandwiches. Put the cheeses you have separated into a separate bowl on bread slices.
  7. To prepare the sunny-side up egg, crack the eggs into the pan. Cook for about 2 minutes until the eggs are golden brown.
  8. Put the eggs on the sandwiches. Season with salt and pepper and serve them immediately.

What Is A Croque-Madame?

A Croque Madame is a French bistro delicacy made with thick slices of white bread stacked with sliced ham and shredded Gruyère cheese. A simple, creamy homemade béchamel sauce flavored with fresh thyme and stone-ground mustard is drizzled over the toasted ham-and-cheese sandwich. Croque Madame derives its name from the egg on top of the sandwich, which is shaped like a wide-brimmed women's hat. There are two ways to make Croque Madame: You can make it into a closed sandwich or an open-faced tartine, which is a French term for a sandwich topped with spreadable things.

What Is The Difference Between A Croque Madame And A Croque Monsieur?

A croque monsieur with a poached or fried egg on top is known as a croque madame. A croque monsieur is a hot sandwich made with ham and cheese over thick white bread pieces. The croque monsieur, which translates as "mister crunch," is a treasure trove of textures; add a fried egg to make it a croque madame. The difference between these two sandwiches is in the way the egg is mixed in with the other ingredients: The bread is dipped in beaten egg before being baked in a croque monsieur. Meanwhile, in a croque madame, the egg is fried and then put on top of the sandwich that has already been formed. A sunny side-up, poached, or gently cooked egg is served on top of a croque madame, adding a layer of richness to the cheese sandwich.

What To Serve With Croque Madame?

Serve your Croque Madame with a bowl of French Onion Soup and a tiny green salad to make it seem like a proper Parisian meal. Croque Madame goes well with other French-inspired dishes. It is also traditionally served with an arugula side salad in France.
